A few weeks ago I set up a brand new Lenovo IdeaPad laptop running Windows 8. The computer hasn’t been used since then and the problem now is that I completely forgot the password I set during the installation process. I have tried many boot CDs but to no avail. How can I remove or reset forgotten Windows 8 password?

Forgot Windows 8 admin password for your Lenovo IdeaPad laptop? Don’t panic. With PCUnlocker Live CD you can reset lost Windows 8 password for both local account and Microsoft account. In this tutorial I’ll walk you through the steps to reset Windows 8 password on Lenovo IdeaPad with UEFI BIOS.

How to Reset Windows 8 Password on Lenovo IdeaPad with UEFI BIOS?

  1. First of all, use another computer to download the PCUnlocker program, which comes as a self-extracting .zip file. After the file has downloaded, extract the pcunlocker.iso file from it. Burn the ISO image to a blank CD using your preferred CD burning program such as ISO2Disc.
  2. Put your newly created CD in the CD drive of your Lenovo IdeaPad laptop. When the laptop is powered off, press the Novo button. This will start up the laptop and provide you with the Novo button menu.

    Novo-button

  3. Choose BIOS Setup from the Novo button menu, and press Enter.

  4. In the BIOS Setup, select the Security tab and change Secure Boot value to Disabled.

    lenovo-secure-boot

  5. Next, on the Boot tab, change the Boot Mode from UEFI to Legacy Support.

    lenovo-boot-mode

  6. You can now save and exit the BIOS, but the laptop will go straight to booting again, so you’ll need to shutdown or power it off in order to use the Novo button again. This time choose Boot Menu from the Novo button menu, and then select to boot from the CD drive.
  7. After booting the laptop from the CD, it loads the Windows PE operating system and finally opens up the PCUnlocker program. The program automatically detects the operating system installed on your hard drive, and then displays a list of Windows 8 local user accounts.

  8. Choose one of your administrator accounts and click on Reset Password button. The program will unlock your selected account and reset the password immediately. Eject the CD and restart your computer. Enter into BIOS Setup and change the BIOS Mode back to UEFI.
  9. Now you’ve successfully reset Windows 8 Password on Lenovo IdeaPad with UEFI BIOS, and you can log back into Windows 8 without a password! Enjoy it!

In this tutorial we’ll show you how to recover Windows 8 picture password and pin code, without brute-forcing them. Both Pin code and Picture Password are authentication methods based on a local user account. During setting up a Pin code or Picture Password, you’ll be prompted to enter the traditional text-based password. The problem is that Windows 8 will then store your Pin code / Picture password as well as the original text password in plain text.

Windows 8 Sign-in Options

Mimikatz is a free open-source tool to recover this plain-text password, it saves you time and power needed to brute force a 16 character NT/LM password during pen-testing or tech work. Follow this tutorial and you can decrypt Windows 8 Pin code and Picture Password in no time.

Note: Mimikatz needs admin privileges to work properly. If you couldn’t log on to Windows 8 as administrator, you can reset the forgotten local administrator password or Microsoft account password with PCUnlocker Live CD/USB drive.

How to Recover Windows 8 Picture Password and Pin Code?

  1. Download the Mimikatz tool (mimikatz_trunk.zip) from Benjamin Delpy’s blog. Decompress the zip file and you’ll then find that the tool has both 32-bit and 64-bit versions – make sure you pick the correct version.
  2. Right-click on the Mimikatz.exe file and select Run as administrator from the context menu.
  3. You’ll be provided with an interactive prompt that allows you to perform a number of different commands. Firstly we’ll need to enable debug mode with the privilege::debug command:
    privilege::debug
  4. Next run the token::elevate command to elevate your privilege to NT Authority\SYSTEM.
    token::elevate

    Mimikatz

  5. Execute the following command and it will quickly extract all types of plain-text passwords from Windows Vault, including Pin code, Picture Password and traditional text password.
    vault::list

    Recover Windows 8 Pin Code and Picture Password

If you use a Microsoft account to log on to Windows 8 and then switch to a Picture Password or a Pin, the Mimikatz tool will be able to dump your Microsoft account password as well. This is the first critical security flaw in Windows 8/8.1 that has already been discovered.

I have a Windows 8 VMware image whose admin password is forgotten. How can I reset or recover the password? Or do I need to rebuild a new machine?

If you ever lost your Windows 8 password, that could be a very heart wrenching feeling. Don’t Panic! This process works for both physical machines as well as Virtual VMware Images. I’ll take you through the steps to reset VMware password:

Step 1: First, download the PCUnlocker program from here and save it on your host machine. The download file is a self-extracting archive which contains an ISO image: pcunlocker.iso.

Step 2: Shut down your Windows 8 VM and attach the PCUnlocker ISO image to the virtual CD/DVD drive.

Step 3: Now you need to change the boot order in BIOS. To make it easier to access the BIOS setup screen, edit the virtual machine’s configuration (.vmx) and add or edit one of these options:

bios.forceSetupOnce = "TRUE"

Step 4: When your VM instance boots, you will be in the BIOS. Change the BIOS settings so that your VM Image first boots from the CDROM. Save your changes and exit.

Step 5: During booting, PCUnlocker will start automatically and you’ll see a list of system user account. Select the user you want to clear the password and clear (delete) that password.

Step 6: Click on “Restart” button to quit this program and then shut down your VM instance.

Step 7: Edit the *.vmx file again and change: bios.forceSetupOnce = “TRUE” to bios.forceSetupOnce = “FALSE”. Save your changes.

Step 8: Restart your VM instance and you can then log back into Windows 8 without a password!

Forgot your Windows 8.1 logon password? You can still log into your computer with non-administrator account but can’t install any software? Most of times we might lose access to the administrator account for various reasons. In this guide I’ll show you how to hack Windows 8.1 password with a boot CD. This hacking trick also applies to Windows 8, 7, Vista and XP.

To get started, we need to make a PCUnlocker Live CD which will allow you to boot from it and reset a lost Windows 8.1 user password. This is useful if a user has forgotten their Windows user password or you need to boot a system in an emergency and you do not know the users password (e.g. a member of staff has left work and you need to gain access to their work PC).

PCUnlocker comes as a self-extracting .zip archive. After downloading it, decompress it and you’ll get a CD image (.iso format). Burn the ISO image to a blank CD using the freeware ISO2Disc, ImgBurn or BurnCDCC program.

Make sure the computer you intend to hack is off. Turn on, and instantly pop in the CD you just created. Press one of the function keys (depending on manufacturer) takes you into the BIOS setup (the first splash screen that pops up when you turn on your computer should tell you which one: often F2, F11 or F12.) There, you should look around until you find where you can change the boot order (this differs from company to company depending on your computer brand). Change the boot order, so the computer first boots from CD then from Hard Disk.

Watch as the CD loads. It will load a temporary version of Windows PE on to the RAM. After a while you’ll see the PCUnlocker program which dumps all user accounts existing in your system. Choose a user account you intend to hack, and then click on “Reset Password” button. The program will blank the existing password of that account instantly.

Now you’ve successfully hacked Windows 8.1 password. Restart the machine and reject the CD. You can then log into your desired user account without a password!
