PCUnlocker is the most popular Windows password cracking software that lets you boot your computer from an image file, over local area network (LAN). This feature is very useful for those computers which are not installed with CD/DVD drives but are connected to LAN.

PXE works with Network Interface Card (NIC) of the system by making it function like a boot device. Nearly every modern Windows PC has a BIOS which supports PXE booting. Just put the PCUnlocker ISO image on a PXE server, you can then boot any other PC/netbook on the same LAN network to use PCUnlocker for resetting a forgotten Windows password!

Newer PCs and laptops pre-installed with Windows 10/8 no longer come with a product key sticker attached to the back or bottom of the PC. Instead, PC manufacturers have worked with Microsoft to embed the product key directly into the BIOS or EFI.

The OEM product key is just not easy to find, and it’s impossible to read without some help. Luckily, you can use the KeyFinder Plus utility to retrieve the OEM-embedded product key from BIOS/EFI.

To view Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 product key from the BIOS or UEFI, simply run KeyFinder Plus on your PC. Upon running the tool and click on “Start Recovery”, it will automatically scan your BIOS or EFI and display the product key. It will also scan the Windows registry for locating CD keys for softwares installed on your PC.

After recover the key, we recommend you store the product key in a safe location. This product key can be used to reinstall Windows with a clean Windows setup CD, or to reinstall Windows after a crash or system failure.

Is it possible to install Windows 8 from a external hard drive without losing data? With the freeeare ISO2Disc you can make a installation CD/USB from Windows 8 ISO image. However, what to do if you don’t have a CD or USB drive in hand? This tutorial will explain how to create a bootable hard drive from Windows 8 ISO image, and then install Windows 8 directly from external hard drive.

Part 1: Copy Windows 8 Installation Files to Hard Drive

  1. First connect your hard drive to another working computer as a slave/second drive.
  2. You need to copy the setup files from Windows 8 ISO to your hard drive. This can be done using the freeware 7-Zip. After installing 7-Zip locally, right-click on your Windows 8 ISO image and select 7-Zip -> Extract files.

  3. Next you need to specify where the destination should be. Click … button to select the root path of the attached hard drive. Click OK.

  4. Now the extracting progress window will display.

When this is done, the extraction dialog will automatically close. Now you’ve successfully copied all contents of Windows 8 ISO to your hard drive.

Part 2: Make Hard Drive Bootable

  1. Open the Command Prompt with admin privileges. In Windows 7, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories. Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  2. In the Command Prompt, type in the following commands, and press Enter key after typing each command.
    List Disk
    Select Disk 1
    List Partition
    Select Partition 1

The commands above will set the first partition of your attached hard drive as active.

  3. Next type this command to mark your hard drive as bootable:
    e:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 e:

Assuming that e: is the drive letter of attached hard drive, where the Windows 8 installation files are copied to.

  4. At this moment your external hard drive is bootable and you can then use it to install Windows 8. Close the Command Prompt and shutdown the computer.

Part 3: Install Windows 8

Place the hard drive back into the target machine. Make sure that the BIOS is configured to boot from the hard drive. If you did everything correctly, you should see the blue Windows logo and setup will load. Install Windows 8 as usual (but don’t format your hard drive this time otherwise it will erase the Windows 8 setup files too).

Microsoft has finally come up with an official tool – Windows Installation Media Creating Tool, which will let you create a Windows 8.1 installation media. If you need to install Windows 8.1 from scratch, no longer do you need to install Windows 8 first, and then update through the Windows store.

This new tool allows you to download and save Windows 8.1 ISO file to your computer and then create a bootable Windows 8.1 installation CD/USB drive. Here’s how:

  1. Head over to Microsoft’s installation tool webpage, and then click the Create media button to download Windows Installation Media Creation Tool (about 1.26 Mb).
  2. Once the file finishes downloading, double-click it to launch the Windows Installation Media Creation Tool. Connect your USB flash drive (at least 4 GB of space should be available) or insert a blank DVD.
  3. This program allows you to select your desired language, Windows 8.1 edition and system architecture (32-bit or 64-bit). As far as editions are concerned, you can get Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 Pro, the N versions of both operating systems, or a single language Windows 8.1 version.

  4. After clicking the Next button, you’ll be presented with two options to save the installation file: create a Windows 8.1 installation USB drive or save the setup ISO image for later user. If you don’t have a USB drive at hand, you should select the 2nd option to save the installation ISO image on your PC which can then be burned to a DVD.

  5. Click Next to download or create the install media. This will take a while depending on the speed of your Internet connection and Windows 8.1 edition that you’re downloading.

Once this is done, you can use the USB flash drive to perform a clean install of Windows 8.1 right away, or burn the ISO image to CD/USB with the freeware ISO2Disc.

Before getting started, you need to find a password recovery utility that supports UEFI booting, because ASUS VivoTab Smart uses 32-bit UEFI firmware instead of legacy BIOS. Here we’ll use the Enterprise edition of PCUnlocker, which works with 32-bit/64-bit UEFI-based computers.

Unzip the downloaded file and you’ll get a CD image called pcunlocker.iso, which needs to be burned onto a USB flash drive (or CD) with the ISO2Disc program. Remember to choose the GPT (required for UEFI boot) option.

After you’ve created a PCUnlocker USB drive, use a Micro USB adapter to connect it to your ASUS VivoTab Smart laptop. If your laptop is running, you must turn off the laptop.

While pressing the Power button, hold the volume down button until you get to the Boot Device Menu screen. From there select Enter Setup. In the BIOS Setup, select the Security tab, disable Secure Boot and Default Key Provisioning.

Navigate to the Boot tab. Under the Boot Option Priorities section, set your USB flash drive as the first boot option. Save your changes and exit BIOS.

For security purpose, we usually set a long and strong password for a Microsoft account, which is fine when I’m logging in to Microsoft website because my password manager software helps – but that’s no good for logging into Windows 8. If you don’t want to type in your password every time Windows starts up, you can setup Windows 8 so that it will bypass the login screen and sign into your Windows 8 Microsoft account automatically.

Tips: If you’ve forgotten your Microsoft account password and unable to reset the password online, you can bypass Windows 8 Microsoft account password with PCUnlocker, so you can still log back into your system and regain access to all your files.

How to Sign into Windows 8 Microsoft Account without Password?

  1. Press the Windows + R keyboard combination to bring up a Run box, when it appears type netplwiz and hit Enter.

  2. This will open the User Accounts dialog box, which will display a list of all the users on your computer, including both local accounts and Microsoft accounts.
  3. Next click on the username in the bottom window, which should be your email address if you are using the Microsoft account to log into your Windows 8 PC. Uncheck the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer checkbox.

  4. Click Apply and you’ll get a pop up dialog that asks you to enter your login credentials. Just type in your Microsoft account password twice and click OK.

  5. Now go ahead and restart your computer and Windows 8 should automatically boot up to the Start Screen, without prompting you to enter a Microsoft account password.

This can speed up the logon process if you are the only user on the system. However, we don’t recommend to enable automatic login if your PC is accessible by multiple users or while you’re traveling.
